IBCs in a transit storage area shall —

  • each not exceed 25 t;
  • be accessible from all sides; and
  • be segregated from each other by at least 5 m.

IBCs will

  • not be stacked more than two containers high and two containers deep;
  • where stacked two containers deep, be provided with access to both sides of each stack;
  • not be in the same vertical stack as any container of other classes of dangerous goods; and
  • be separated from containers of other classes of dangerous goods by at least 3 m.
  • Parked road vehicles loaded with corrosive substances shall be separated from any other loaded vehicles by at least 3 m, and from any other dangerous goods stores within the area by at least 5 m.
IBCs and packages may be placed on the ground in loading and unloading areas prior to loading vehicles or prior to moving containers to a storage area or installation.

The ground should be impervious and designed to retain any spillage or drain to a containment for environmental reasons

A “Package” is a container <500L

Separation of stores from protected places

All package stores of corrosive substances shall be separated from protected places by not less than the distances set out in Table 5.3.2.

(See table: 5 m for PG II)

Segregation of corrosive substances

Stores of packaged corrosive substances, other than storage cabinets, shall be segregated from incompatible goods and goods with which they might react dangerously in accordance with the following:

(a) Where the substances being kept are incompatible, they shall be —

  • kept in separate compounds; or
  • segregated by a distance of not less than 5 m

(b) Stores shall be provided with a means of either containing a spill or of diverting it to a compound within the boundaries of the premises.

The net capacity of any compound shall be not less than whichever is the greater of —

(i) 25 % of the aggregate volume of liquids kept; or

(ii) the capacity of the largest container kept;

but need not exceed 5,000 L where only packages are kept.

Separation distances

Tanks shall be separated in accordance with the following requirements:

  • The minimum separation distances for tanks from protected places and the boundaries of the premises shall be as set out in Table 6.3.2.
  • Where a bund is provided, subject to the concession in the Note to Table 6.3.2, the minimum distance between the top inside perimeter of the bund and any protected place or boundary shall be 3 m [see also Clause 9.2.1(a)].

Segregation

  • Corrosive substances that are kept in tanks shall be segregated from incompatible goods and goods with which they might react dangerously by a distance of not less than 5 m.
Compound drainage

Substances that might react dangerously shall not be directed into a common compound.
